I can't get over how good this game looks:

I'm a lifelong Dragon Quest junkie, so to me, this is like a dream -- my favorite game series FINALLY gets a developer that's worth a damn (Level-5) to bring Yuji Horii's vision to life. It's like a recipe for gaming perfection, at least as far as I'm concerned. I spent over 120 hours with Dragon Quest VII, and that game looked like utter $#!%. To be able to explore a world like that with graphics like these just seems too good to be true.
To see more, head over to Level-5's Dragon Quest VIII page, which just went up today. I'm also looking forward to their other big project, the Xbox MMORPG, True Fantasy Live Online. Sure, the title is retarded (I'm sure Microsoft is to blame for that), but the game itself looks really promising.
Posted by john tv at August 2, 2003 04:16 AM | TrackBackyeah. as excited as i am for the game to look super excellent, i am hoping for innovations on the gameplay fronts more. i don't understand how mch control level 5 will have over that, but i think that there were many good things about dark cloud 2 and i hope they can influence this.
i pretty much want to kill msyelf whenever i think about the possibility of ever playing or even looking at dragon warrior vii again after i spent about 30-40 hours on it. seriously.
Posted by: ferricide at August 2, 2003 10:06 AMit does look pretty slick, but i bet you get pretty tired of those trees after 120hrs :)
general RPG question: have you ever played a single-player Japanese RPG that lets you create your own character? i'm playing KotOR and NWN right now, and that strikes me as the design decision that determines most of the differences between East/West RPGs. Isn't it about time Square and BioWare tried it the other way around?
Posted by: Cormac at August 5, 2003 12:57 PMI dunno, did you get tired of KotOR yet? If DQ8 has a job system like the one in DQ6 and DQ7, I think I could wander around pretty much forever. :)
You always play as "you" in Dragon Quest games, but you still don't have any control over how your character looks. I can't really think of any 1P J-RPGs that let you make your own character, though. I'm sure there are some, but none spring to mind. Final Fantasy I did that, but only in the most rudimentary form...
Posted by: john tv at August 7, 2003 03:40 PMI don't like RPGs and thus have never played Dragon Quest, but I have to say I do like the look of that screen. A wide open world to explore, rolling hills... looks cool!
Probably still won't play it, but hey.
