Just a random shot of the inside of the express train I was riding today on my way into the office. Even though we were speeding along, everything felt so calm and tranquil. For whatever reason, I felt compelled to capture the moment with a picture from my camera.
Of course, said tranquility could've just been a side effect of the cold medicine I was on, but hey, what can you do...
Ever since I was little, riding the old SIRR back in New York, I've been a sucker for trains. Someday I wanna ride the Yamanote-sen around its entire route for a couple of hours to see what it's like. It goes in a complete circle around Tokyo, so you can literally get on it and ride it forever if you want. Might be a fun way to read a book or listen to a new CD or something...

Posted by: Parisi at July 10, 2003 06:37 AMI've done the riding the Yamanote line forever. It was fun! The only thing you need to watch out is not to get off at the same station that you started. They will charge you extra money.
Posted by: yuki at July 10, 2003 09:18 AMOne night, about 7 years ago, a friend and I made the journey from Kyoto to Tokyo. We were poor college students and couldn't afford hotels. We went to Blue (Aoyama... no longer there) on Friday night, stayed out all night, and then slept on the Yamanote. We made it around 2x until my friend (a MALE who had longish, blonde hair and was wearing a trenchcoat) got felt up by some pervert.
It was really bright out so we couldn't get back to sleep after my friend freaked out at the perv, so we got off at Shinjuku and ate at the Mister Donuts.
We couldn't stay out very late that next day, having only gotten 2 hours of sleep sitting up on a hot, bright train with pervs, so we crashed at a capsule hotel in Kabukicho... classy times.

Posted by: a0me at July 10, 2003 10:19 PMi've done multiple laps of the Yamanote after Roppongi too, but because i kept falling asleep and missing my stop rather than because I wanted to kill time. "Ah, Shinjuku..just a few more stops to Ikebukuro! - snooze - arse! Sugamo! ah well, i'll just close my eyes for a bit..."
I eventually got home at about 11.30 am that day.
Posted by: Cormac at July 10, 2003 11:32 PMI rode the Yamanote Line for six hours one morning, right after I got kicked out of my apartment. It was January 25th, 2003. I had a hangover, yet I hadn't drunk. It was a very cold morning. I rode the Yamanote from seven AM to one PM, wondering where the hell I was going to live. It took me more than a little while to figure it out.
At Akabane, I gave up the Yamanote for the Keihin-Tohoku, and rode up to Omiya, where I ate tempura and got in contact with an old friend, who had actually moved to Shiki. Feeling reckless, I drank a Dr. Pepper on the Kawagoe Line out west.
It was good rides all around. In the next couple weeks, I rode the Yamanote for four hours a day, and I met a friend that way. She'd just lost her job, and I was riding the Yamanote all day with a stack of paperback novels and a bag of popcorn in her overlarge purse to keep her busy. She didn't want her brother to know she'd lost her job. From that day on, we rode the Yamanote together, meeting at the Shinjuku platform and departing at Ikebukuro.
You meet the weirdest people in the weirdest ways, sometimes.
Posted by: tim at July 11, 2003 02:59 PMYuki -- thanks for the tip! That's actually really useful, 'cause if I wasn't thinking otherwise, I might've actually done just that (got off at the same stop I got on). :)
